Information

Rome, at Andrea Dossena, 1544, in 8°. Half leather and hardback binding, red spray edges and title tag imprinted in gold. Printer's device on the title page and woodcut initials, numerous architectural woodcuts in the text, light marginal foxing. Loss to the upper cap.

Specialist Notes

Rare first edition of Philandrier's commentary on Vitruvius , which was later included in editions of the main text of Vitruvius and influenced Daniele Barbaro's commentary. Philandrier had been a pupil of Sebastiano Serlio in Paris and had this work printed while in Italy with Bishop Georges d'Armagnac (Titian painted a double portrait of the two in Venice in the late 1430s); he also had the opportunity to further his research alongside Italian humanist scholars of the time, such as Pirro Ligorio and Claudio Tolomei. Philandrier's commentary includes substantial quotations from Vitruvius, including some emendations of the standard text. This is the first work in which Vitruvius' name appears in the form now generally recognized, Marcus Vitruvius Pollio. The printing is thought to have been executed by Antonio Blado on behalf of Dossena , who was also a bookseller in Bologna. Both Blado and Dossena were connected with Giordano Ziletti of Venice, who re-edited the work with a new title page in 1557.
