Specialist Notes

Jean Antoine Nollet (1700 - 1770), member of the Royal Society of London and of the Academie des Sciences in Paris. He was one of the most famous scientists of his time, Raimondo di Sangro Prince of Sansevero held an important and secret correspondence with him regarding the "Eternal Lumen" partially revealed in the very rare work "Lettres écrites par Monsieur le Prince de S. Severe de Naples a mons.r l'Abbé Nollet, contenant la rélation d'une decouverte……A Naples, chez Joseph Raimondi, 1753”. He introduced experimental physics in France which he enriched with remarkable discoveries such as that of endosmosis and with important research on the behavior of the electric fluid in pipes; on the electric power of the spikes, on the acceleration of evaporation in electrifying fluids, etc. "Lectures on Experimental Physics" is Nollet's most important work, it had numerous editions and translations and is considered as a monument of science of that time. In it, among others, Newton's theory is exposed for the first time in an elementary way.
