Specialist Notes

Antique edition, with diagrams, equations and tables in the text. The first edition was published in Antwerp in 1540. Smith, Rara Arithmetica, p. 200: "This was the most popular arithmetic book of the sixteenth century, at least among those intended for Latin schools. It combined the oldest science of numbers with the commercial arithmetic of Italian writers." This specific edition is not listed in Smith which lists nearly 50 editions in the 16th century. "A popular text that includes ancient arithmetic theories with commercial practices". Stillwell. 171 (1540 original edition). Adams G378 (this edition): not at Harvard, Bm, Stc.
