Specialist Notes
First edition in elegant coeval red Moroccan binding. The work is a response to the book by the Protestant minister Claude, which in turn was an attack on a book by Aubertin. The work of Arnaud and Nicole goes beyond the simple framework of the controversy and contestation of the arguments of Claude's book, it wants to be an exhaustive treatise on the Eucharist and on the mysteries of the Holy Mass accumulating historical evidence, in particular those borrowed from the Church of Orient. Arnauld and Nicole, theologians of Port-Royal, supported the religious quarrel against the Protestants. The Eucharist was a point of untouchable Catholic dogma, to deny it as Protestants did, was to question the principle of transubstantiation with the body of Christ and the possibility of grace, and dismantle the rites of the Mass and its necessity. This is why controversial literature on the Eucharist and grace is so important, the two Churches will not cease to nourish it.
