Information

Oscar nomination for best foreign film for Pasqualino Settebellezze by Lina Wertmuller, wooden plaque measuring 345 x 302 mm, produced by Perma Plaque of Hollywood.

Specialist Notes

Lina Wertmuller was the first woman nominated for an Oscar as director in 1976 for the film Pasqualino Settebellezze which also received nominations for best foreign language film,  best original screenplay and best leading actor to Giancarlo Giannini. In 2019, at the age of ninety, she was awarded the Oscar for lifetime achievement. Wertmüller's work, her breakthrough films in the 70s have always been much loved abroad and there are many reviews around the world dedicated to her. Among all her films, Pasqualino Settebellezze remains the most famous film, also due to the partnership with Giancarlo Giannini who nurtures a form of veneration as well as respect for Wertmüller . The film received a Golden Globe nomination and four Oscar nominations, including best director, the first time ever in the history of the Academy for a woman. It is an intelligent and ferocious apologia of the art of making do and surviving at any cost, typical of Neapolitan culture: Giancarlo Giannini is the guy who in 1936 Naples kills the seducer of one of his seven ugly sisters (hence his nickname ), he is locked up in a criminal asylum from which he leaves as a war volunteer to end up in a German concentration camp and become a kapo.
