Specialist Notes
Splendid example in amateur's binding, of illustrious provenance. Famous translation of Cervantes by Florian, who also translated Don Quixote into French. The Galatea (1585) was his first translation of Cervantes to be published. Defer de Maisonneuve perfected the technique of engraving color plates that had developed a lot during the 18th century. He succeeded in making it possible for printers to create images with gradual changes in tone and differences in color intensity, instead of the usual sequence of separate and distinct colors. Cohen-De Ricci 399.
