Provenance
In 1970, at the "Saloncino dell'auto sportiva", the volcanic Carlo Abarth presented a prototype based on the Autobianchi A112 equipped with a 107 hp engine, with the hope that Fiat, owner of the Autobianchi, would give him the possibility of develop a new racing car; Abarth's A112 pleased the public and the press and above all Fiat top management, who saw in the small car an excellent antagonist to the sports version of the Mini: the Cooper Mk3 recently launched on the market, Fiat decided for mass production of the A112 Abarth rather than an expensive racing car. At the 1971 Turin Salone dell'Automobile, the definitive version of the Autobianchi A112 Abarth debuted, with racing red bodywork, satin black bonnet and side skirts. The engine developed by Abarth was a 982 cc, with a compression ratio of 10: 1, double-barrel carburetor and sports exhaust and had a power of 58 hp. The interior was modified with bucket seats, additional instrumentation and a three-spoke steering wheel with leather rim. The Abarth preparation recorded a drop in petrol consumption by as much as -15% and above all made the little Autobianchi very fun to drive. The A112 commonly called “12” in Italy saw seven different series including the special 1979 Gold Ring featuring black livery and gold-colored alloy wheels. In 12 years on the market, the A112 Abarth was renewed several times without changing the design, while from a mechanical point of view the most important innovations were: the adoption of the 70 Hp engine in 1975, the 5-speed gearbox in 1979 and the electronic ignition, also in 1979. In 1977 Fiat created the Autobianchi A112 Abarth 70 HP Championship, which through a simple conversion kit allowed the owners of A112 Abarth to try their hand at rallies including some stages of the Italian championship, the final prize was a race with an official Fiat car. The success of the A112 Abarth lasted until July 1985 when it left the manufacturer's list.
The car
The Autobianchi A112 chassis no. 199199 is a rare first series in the colour variant proposed only after the launch with the car wearing the only racing red/matt black bonnet livery. From September 1972, however, the Salmone (282) color of this specimen was introduced, together with the Mink color (Visone). Always with the matt black hood. Salmone was and is the rarest shade to find. The interior remains unchanged, but the metal part of the dashboard takes the body color instead of black. Even the 58 hp mechanics are unchanged from the first examples and the interiors retain the bucket seats with integrated headrest. Aesthetically it differs from the following examples for the chrome frames of the headlights and grille, which will be replaced by black plastic elements. While the bumpers, here still in chromed sheet metal, will later be increased and covered in black rubber. The car has undergone a mechanical and bodywork restoration not recent, but it is in excellent condition, very well maintained. The car is equipped with alloy wheels from the following series, but has the original steel rims and is equipped with fog lights. Plates and booklet (in pages) are those of origin. The car took part in the Campionato Italiano Regolarità a Media in 2018, obtaining important results such as the victory at the Rally dei Fiori.
