An interesting pair of engraved Merwin Hulbert & Co. D.A. Pocket Model Revolvers with case, NULL

5-1/2", 38 centerfire barrels. Marked "MERWIN HULBERT & Co. NEW YORK USA / PAT. APR. 17.77 JUNE 15.80 MAR.14.82 JAN.9.83" in two lines. Dorsal rib. Clean bores and visible rifling. Gilded, five-shot cylinder with fuller, with remains of red enamels. Typical opening with the barrel swiveling and sliding along the cylinder pin. Frame marked ì38 CAL.î on the left side. Both the revolvers working in single and double action (one barely holding the cocking position on the second snap). The loading gates of the revolvers were taken off, yet the sliding slot is still intact. Bird's-head grip. Smooth, mother-of-pearl grips, the screws holding the grip scales are ruined, difficult to remove. Remains of nickel-finishing (30% circa). Both revolvers with engravings, probably of the factory (see the notes below for various documented models that can be compared to ours), with an almost identical pattern, the only differ in small details including some hedgehogs or leaves in the drawings and the two animals depicted on the left side: a bird and a hunting dog. The two revolvers feature non-consecutive serial numbers, and coeval numbering on the barrel and cylinder. In a wooden case (probably of that period), covered with black Moroccan leather outside (missing parts) and with burgundy satin inside. Lock without key.
