Auction details

An auction with a strong international character is what the Department of Figurative Art between the 19th and 20th century is offering on 13 May.

Many artists were British and French: from Patrick Nasmyth, pioneer of Scottish landscape painting, to George Lance, master of still life, from Jalabert to Ziem, passing by Joseph Fernand Boissard de Boisdenier's bloody Russian battlefield scene, to two giants of the century's art: Eugène Delacroix and Gustave Courbet.

In the field of discoveries, a pyrotechnic painting by Mario Cavaglieri and a portrait by Antonio Mancini; none other than Baron Giorgio Sonnino, brother of the then Prime Minister Sidney Sonnino, stand out.
One of the top lots is undoubtedly Luigi Gioli's Ponte alla carraia, with a first-class bibliography and exhibition record, where Florence is portrayed as a modern Paris and where the effort of the horses is described with more attention than the numerous extras rendered with a modernity unprecedented for the time.
