Specialist Notes

Shortly before 1908, the chemists of the artistic glassworks Johann Loetz Witwe created a new shade of orange, warmer than the already existing Tangerine, which was nicknamed Tango, a color with an exotic appeal that would be constantly in fashion with variations in minimal shades. To present this new glass paste they made use of the drawings of Josef Hoffmann, father of Art Deco and the hand of Adolf Beckert, a true innovator in the field of glass engraving. Joseph Hoffmann, star architect of the moment, expresses himself in this futuristic vase with its classic arches, its friezes and its starry cross; the latter, one of the constant symbols in Hoffmann's architecture, present in windows, tables and accessories. Blown in an undercut mold with three layers of color Tangerine inside, crystal in the middle and Tango outside and with interventions of a water wheel , wheel, spherical grinding wheels and acids, Beckert demonstrates all his experience and skill. The shape of the vase, totally curved and narrowing towards the center, dramatically increased the difficulty of execution and consequently the costs. This was one of the reasons that put an end to this partnership, it lasted less than a year. Beckert becomes the director and Hoffmann brings in Hans Bolek as designer.
