Milan, from the printing house and foundry to the Genio Tipografico, year IX [1800-1801], In 2°. 277 x 220 mm. 36 numbered copper engravings, of which 30 in the text and 6 outside the text folded several times, the first engraving on the title page, occasional foxing and a stain in the upper margin of the first two folded leaves but an excellent copy, with margins and printed on strong paper, with the plates heavily inked, modern binding in full green cloth with gold title on a tag on the spine, preserved in a green percaline case.
Specialist Notes
Excellent copy, printed on strong paper. First edition of this very important work for the history of Italian landscape design, which illustrates the gardens of the Bel Paese inspired by English parks, and teaches and celebrates "the art of gardens". The engravings are by Gaetano Riboldi, based on a design by Giuseppe Levati, professor at Brera, and depict, among other things, Villa Silva in Cinisello, the author's villa, who in the book illustrates the transformation of his baroque garden to the new style, then Villa Cusani in Desio, the lake of Villa Reale in Monza, the gardens of Palazzo Belgiojoso in Milan and of the Castello di Belgiojoso, near Pavia. The work provides a long catalogue of plants (herbs, shrubs and trees) "suitable for the English garden". The famous pastry chef Carême was inspired by the architectural models in this text for his elaborate culinary compositions. The work also inspired a passage from Ugo Foscolo's 'Sepolcri'. It had considerable importance for the diffusion of the art of the "landscape garden" in Italy and of English gardens, "a particular form of 'landscaping' which included a series of architectural complements (small temples, turrets, false ruins, coffee-houses and more)'' ( Il Gran Teatro delle Fabbriche, edited by Paliaga and Valeriani, Milan 2000).
