Specialist Notes

I opera: Alfred Delvau (1825-1867), a Parisian journalist and writer, was the author of numerous works dedicated mainly to the history of Paris and France. This Erotic Dictionary was his most controversial work, which also caused him numerous legal problems. Extremely rare fourth edition, revised and enlarged, produced by the Société Biblio-Aphrodiphile and never put on the market. The edition is based on the one printed by Jules Gay in Neuchatel in 1874, which featured the frontispiece by Rops, while this one features the frontispiece drawn and engraved by Chauvet. The first clandestine edition was printed in Brussels in 1864 and was condemned to destruction in 1865.
