How bidding works

Information

Copper engraving, coloured, 49x58 cm. Latin text on the reverse. Derivation of the very rare map by Stefano Buonsignori inserted in Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum starting from 1595. With passepartout.

Specialist Notes

The Teatrum Orbis Terrarum is considered the first true modern "atlas", including maps of all areas of the world: before then, cartographic production had been irregular, local in production and the few atlases, the so-called "Lafrerian Atlases" were made on request by collecting maps of some areas, ignoring the others. Ortelius gathered together in a single corpus the heterogeneous cartographic production of the period, constituting the basis for an enormously successful publishing enterprise, published from 1570 to 1612.
