Specialist Notes

Very tasty satirical work on stinginess, which contains the statutes and precepts of the imaginary Florentine academy "Compagnia della Lesina", whose members are dedicated to absolute savings. Bizarre ways to save money on every aspect of daily life are listed, from clothing to food to money management. This work is responsible for the entry into the Italian lexicon of the term "lesinare", deriving precisely from «lesina»: «The figurative meaning [of lesina] perhaps derives from a burlesque book of the century. 16th, "Of the very famous Compagnia della Lesina", which told of a company of misers who had an awl as their symbol, due to the habit, among other miserly things, of repairing their own shoes" (Treccani Vocabulary< /i>, s.v. lesina); Kress it. 62; Einaudi 1498; Brunet II 1175; Melzi,Dictionary of anonymous works, I, p. 172; Vinciana, 3495-3502; Westbury, 97-101 and Vicaire,Bibl. gastronomique, pp. 195-96.
