Specialist Notes

FIRST EDITION of the first draft of the Secchia rapita, the greatest Italian heroic-comic poem.
Composed between 1614 and 1618, the work was initially circulated in manuscript, but did not escape to the attentions of the Inquisition. After some attempts, including clandestine ones, to have it printed in Modena and Padua, the author was forced by ecclesiastical censors to opt for France. Thus, thanks to the interest of Jean Chapelain, friend and collaborator of G.B. Marino, the Taxonian poem saw the light of day in Paris in the last months of 1621.A vast poem in twelve cantos in octaves, La secchia rapita narrates the war that broke out between Bologna and Modena following the theft by the Modenese , called Gemignani from the name of their patron saint, of a worm-eaten bucket belonging to the Petronians, i.e. the Bolognese. The third printing differs from the second because in the notice to readers the real name of the author hidden under the pseudonym Androvinci Melisone is revealed.
