Copper engraving, taken from "Civitate Orbis Terrarum...". The paper is adorned with elegant scrolls containing the title and historical notes in Latin and characters in medieval costume. Measurement cm. 48.1 x 32.7 wider margins.
This example, the second state of the plan, appears in editions of the Civitates from 1574, (first published in 1572) with the spelling "Westmuster" (Westminster) and containing the Royal Exchange (founded in 1565). The plan is based on a survey of pre-16th century London, as St. Paul's is shown with its steeple destroyed in 1561. Showing details of the building and landmarks, the map gives the viewer an insight into life of the 16th century in the city. On the south bank of the Thames, both bull-training and bear-training arenas are shown, while beer halls appear in several locations on the north bank. Description of London on the reverse in German.
