Specialist Notes
The best-known writing that Caro created for the Accademia dei Virtuosi was the Commentary of Ser Agresto da Ficaruolo on the first Ficata of his father Siceo, that is, on an incredibly sloppy and obvious chapter in Francesco's lewd allusions Maria Molza. It is enough to read the warning that Barbagrigia (Antonio Blado) wanted to precede Caro's comment to understand how the work obeys an attempt at restoration and, at the same time, marginalization of the Bernian experience. The most interesting aspects of the operetta are offered by some disproportionately erudite digressions which make us rethink Berni's predilection for "antiquities", by a certain sketching skill which is expressed quite happily in the portraits of the pedant, of Molza, of "ser Cecco" Benci ; sometimes the dictation of the commentary stumbles upon characters who onomastically reveal a voluptuous and unmentionable habit (Ciacco Compoppista, Leccardo Grufoloni); sometimes the explication of a term gives rise to variations of this kind, authorized by considerable analogical wisdom.
