Coeval binding in full parchment, cords, inserts on a golden and colored background with title and friezes in gold. Very rare original edition.
Specialist Notes
Govert Bidloo (1649-1713) was a Dutch anatomist, professor and personal physician to William III of England. He was also a prolific opera librettist and playwright, authoring the libretto for the first ever Dutch opera in 1686. Credited with various medical discoveries, he studied anatomy in Amsterdam under the famous Frederic Ruysch (1638-1731) and publishedAnatomy humani corporisonly three years after graduation. In this work, the human body is represented starting from the skin, passing through the internal structures of the head, thorax and abdomen, the male and female reproductive organs (including the stages of fetal development), the muscles and finally the skeletal bones. of adults and children. The 105 beautifully engraved plates, frontispiece and author's portrait were designed by the famous Dutch painter Gerard de Lairesse (1641-1711). Hugely successful in Amsterdam, Lairesse's popularity even surpassed that of Rembrant by the end of the 17th century. The book was subsequently plagiarized by the English surgeon William Cowper, for the writing of his Anatomy of the Humane Bodies(1698), not recognizing any merit in the work of Bidloo or de Lairesse. This led to caustic discussions between Bidloo and Cowper and the writing of several publications in which both anatomists defended their positions. This rare first collective edition collects all of Bildoo's anatomical and surgical works, The plates that accompany this Work, here expanded with previously unpublished figures, are taken from his Anatomia humani corporis (1685) and are the work of Gérard de Lairesse, a friend of Rembrandt who left him a portrait. In a total break with convention,Lairesse introduced the art of the painter into anatomical description, drawing the grace and boldness of his representations from the "vanitas", a subject that he refined.
