Specialist Notes

Original, rare edition of one of the most interesting treatises on fencing.
Agocchie, a gentleman and famous 16th century Bolognese fencer, introduces us with excellent mastery into the world of the art of fencing, joust, ordinary battles. The Treaty is written in the form of a dialogue, whose interlocutors are Giovanni dall'Agocchie himself and Lepido Ranieri . Agocchie's thoughts on his contemporary colleagues and on the importance of the study and practice of fencing for the man of armsis well summarized at cc. 4v-5v.: "With all my power I have tried and I have used all diligence to know the reason some weapons about the screen; but many and soì different opinions always on thisò I have heard that I have not yet become capable of what was the my intent, but I was left with the intellect more clouded and inflamed with the desire to understand it nis never does is presented an opportunity to be able to do it as now , where I hope, through you, to be fully satisfied. So I want to know if screen art canò give a firm rule that can lead man to true knowledge of it.(...)".< div>Adams A, 331. 1572
