Venice, at the sign of Hope, 1545. In 18°, 110 x 62 mm. 216 of the civil code. Image of hope on the title page with motto: "Miser chi speme in cosa mortal puone", reinforced title page, small hole with loss on p.125 formerly compensated in pen, tear in the inner margin of p.134 restored with adhesive tape, marginal browning on some papers, overall an excellent copy, full leather binding from the 17th century. To the obverse ex libris of Maurice Baring (1874-1945), he dedicates to Betty (that is Elizabeth Ponsonby, daughter of Henry Ponsonby, Queen Victoria's personal secretary) on the endpaper dated 1909 by Maurice himself.  ;

Delightful paperback copy of a very rare edition, here in a copy of illustrious provenance: Maurice Baring was an English man of letters, known as a playwright, poet, novelist, translator and essayist, as well as a writer travel and war correspondent, with particular knowledge of Russia. During World War I, Baring served in the Intelligence Corps and Royal Air Force.“Very rare, nice edition, reprinted in 1550 in 24th and in 1552 in 16th.” Mambelli, n.31.
