Paper manuscript composed of a single hand in English, dated May 31, 1830, about 70 pages, 235 x 200 mm., bound in long-grain green morocco with gold decorations on plates and spine, worn. Also in the lot is an exercise book on various subjects by Marguerite Ruffo Scilla, dated 1872 [it will probably be Eleonora Margherita Maria Luigia Ruffo di Calabria Santapau Ruffo di Calabria, Princess of Scilla, Duchess of Santa Cristina (1861-1954)].
Specialist Notes
Classic romantic album of memories of an English girl named Matilda, who collects for the use and consumption of her memory and her soul, thoughts, poems, images, etc. It begins with an inscription from Byron, the one on the "Monument of the Newfoundland Dog", dated October 30, 1808, followed by a delightful map of the Island of Matrimony, and then a composition entitled Can this be death? followed by a print depicting the Corsair's wife. Diary pages alternate with incisions pasted on sheets, perhaps a source of romantic inspiration for thoughts and poems. Everything to study.
