Milan, Giuseppe Galeazzi, 1776. In 8°. Bearded copy with a beautiful copper-engraved vignette on the title page depicting the allegory of justice, woodcut friezes, rare and slight marginal foxing, brown cloth binding of a later period, author and title embossed in gold within a label on the spine, small scratch on the front plate.
Specialist Notes
Rare first Italian translation of the German original (1775). Joseph von Sonnenfels is considered the most illustrious representative of the Enlightenment of the time of Joseph II for his notable contribution to the introduction of new currents of thought in Austria. The economist and jurist, Austrian by adoption but born in Moravia (1733-Vienna 1817), was a professor of Chamber sciences, rector of the University of Vienna, president of the Academy of Fine Arts as well as an influential advisor to the Austrian sovereigns Joseph II and Maria Theresa of Austria. He favored and supported various reforms, including the abolition of torture and the death penalty similar to Cesare Beccaria. His work in the field of criminal law was so incisive and fruitful that his treatise merged into the "Josephine penal code".
