Specialist Notes

Third edition, the most complete and exhaustive, of this fundamental and vast historical, genealogical and heraldic work on Savoy and the Savoy dynasty from its origins to 1601. As well as the second edition of 1561, it too is divided into three books: but while the first two are increased only by a few additions or corrections at the end of the chapters, the third book contains twenty more chapters which include the continuation of the reign of Charles Emmanuel I until the peace of 1601 (the last chapter gives the text of the Treaty of Lyon on January 17, 1601 which signed the peace between Henry IV of France and Carlo Emanuele I of Savoy and sanctioned the annexation of the Marquisate of Saluzzo to the Savoy Duchy). These changes and additions are due to Jean de Tournes, as indicated by himself in the warning to the reader, following the death of Paradin in 1590.
