Specialist Notes

Polemical writing, contrasted with the ideas of Montesquieu, against the nobility considered idle and parasitic in France in the mid-18th century. Coyer (1707 - 1782) in fact saw in productive activities, and in particular in trade, the possibility of redemption for the noble class. This work, which questioned the economic and social system on which the nation was founded, caused an enormous and immediate sensation, both among Enlightenment intellectuals and among their detractors, forcing the Author to publish a "Defense" of it. next year.
