Provenance

Heirs Stefanori, Rome.
This lot and the next two represent an interesting testimony of the creative process behind a little known work by Stefanori, "Il Sacco di Roma". A large painting whose current location is unknown but which a vintage photo and the family memory of the heirs places in an environment of the now abandoned Castello Guglielmi, or Castello Isabella, on the Maggiore Island on Lake Trasimeno. The neo-Gothic palace, erected in 1887 and redecorated starting in 1891, would have housed the work of Stefanori. The painting with a strong narrative character depicts a scene, animated by many characters, of the famous sack of Rome in 1527 at the hands of the lansquenets. The figures of the studies offered in this auction show a sure and mature hand with extraordinary expressiveness, almost Caravaggesque, and testify to a synthesis of gesture that make these cartoons something more than simple studies.
