Specialist Notes

"It is one of the last works dedicated to the representation of the Monte Carlo casino. The composition is simplified: the figures are arranged along two horizontal registers, that of the players and behind that of the spectators while the foreground is occupied by the gambling table game" (M. Di Giovanni Madruzza, Pompeo Mariani, cit. n. 1308).
The charm of a documented work like this lies above all in the swarm of figures that modernly become almost flaming silhouettes at the gaming table, where each of the characters is characterized precisely by Mariani: from the man in the foreground with the almost distraught glasses that we find in other paintings of this subject, the inveterate players who follow with great enthusiasm everything on the extreme right of the work, the onlookers behind who close the painting like a theatrical backdrop. In short, the universe of Mariani, a frequenter of high society in casinos, emerges in all its almost caricatural narration.
