Specialist Notes

Monumental masterpiece by Beppe Ciardi, it was illustrated for the first time in 1935 on the occasion of the retrospective sale organized by his family in Rome after the master's death in 1932.
It is a flagship painting by Beppe Ciardi, which goes beyond the lesson of his father Guglielmo in favor of a more substantial and modern materiality, with sudden lighting both in the masterfully clouded sky and in the lagoon sea dusted with crystalline light.
The scene, numbered by the artist as N. 1 - demonstrating the extreme importance of the painting as representative evidence - it is characterized by the group in the foreground and the solitary and detached figure on the left, almost as if to create that cinematic sense of vast space developed strongly horizontally.
The desire to pay homage his father's painting and also certain solutions by Ettore Tito mix with Beppe's pointillist repertoire which is in tune with the international examples seen at the Biennials between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; the contribution of the painters belonging to the so-called Glasgow School should not be forgotten, which sought the interpretative key above all in the atmospheric effect and which had played a central role at the Venice Biennale of 1897.
