The present work is a study for the figure on the far right of the painting The Last Days of Domenico Morelli, currently preserved at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Udine. The work, large in size and with a horizontal cut like the more famous Beethoven, a masterpiece by Lionello Balestrieri, was created in 1902 and exhibited in the same year at the Glaspalast in Munich, before being presented to the public again in the Venice Biennale of 1903. It was on that occasion that it was purchased by the Marangoni Artistic Foundation for the Udine collections. The present study appears immortalized alongside Balestrieri, another smaller study and the finished painting in a 1902 photo of the painter in his studio in Paris.
