Édouard Louis Joseph Merckx , known to all as Eddy Merckx , was born in Meensel-Kiezegem, Belgium, on 17 June 1945. Considered by many to be the greatest cyclist of all time, he dominated cycling racing in the 1960s and 1970s, collecting an unrivalled list of victories.
Nicknamed "The Cannibal" for his ferocity in competition and his insatiable desire to win , Merckx triumphed in every major cycling race:
Giro d'Italia: 5 victories (1968, 1970, 1972, 1973, 1974)
Tour de France: 5 victories (1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1974)
Vuelta a España: 1 victory (1973)
Road World Championships: 3 victories (1967, 1971, 1974)
Milan-Sanremo: 7 victories (record)
Liège-Bastogne-Liège: 5 wins (record)
Tour of Flanders: 2 victories
Paris-Roubaix: 3 victories
In addition to his stage race victories, Merckx also set the hour record, with 49.43195 km covered in 1972, a record that remained unbeaten for 12 years.
Merckx retired from professional cycling in 1978. He continued to be involved in the cycling world as an executive and television commentator. In 2000, he was inducted into the Cycling Hall of Fame.
