Specialist Notes

The monograph constitutes an interesting study on a government body created by Ferdinand IV, with a dispatch dated 4 June 1784, on the occasion of the terrible earthquake that devastated Calabria in 1783, with "all the revenues of the pious places of Calabria Ulteriore to be used in the restoration of the same". The earthquake caused the death of approximately 30,000 inhabitants and the destruction of almost all the buildings. The "Cassa Sacra" intervened for the reconstruction of public works, for relief and annuities and was suppressed in 1796 following confirmed administrative disorders which did not allow a complete implementation of the tasks for which the "Cassa" had been created. Grimaldi, in his monograph, highlighting the opportunity and validity of the initiative as conceived "from the beginning", regrets the delays and failure to implement various reconstruction works and financial aid to the populations. Subsequently, these tasks were entrusted to the "Delegation of Monte Frumentario" which however concluded its activity badly, about ten years later, in the context of the suppression of the deadmen, introduced by the subversion of feudalism desired by the French government.
