Paris, Gandouin and Giffart, 1729-'33. In 2nd, 427 x 275 mm. Title page with engraved portrait on the first volume, half-titles on volumes 2-5, titles in red and black, 306 engraved plates (of which 114 double-page spread and one folding), engraved headers, marginal flourishes, BEAUTIFUL COEVAL BINDING IN SPONGED CALF, with back with 7 raised bands enclosing gilt-decorated compartments, title on the back in gilt letters on a red label, in the center of the plates the splendid coat of arms of Manuel Pinto de Fonseca (1681- 1773), Portuguese nobleman, Grand Master of the Order of Malta from 1741 until his death.

The plates illustrate historical scenes from paintings, portraits, ceremonies, costumes, monuments, illuminated manuscripts, jewels and silverware, etc. In particular, there is the integral representation of the Bayeux tapestry.
