Information
An important testimony of Italian journalism is the photographic service by Ivo Meldolesi on Salvatore Giuliano, immortalized in a farmhouse in Sicily. In those days of 1949 Giuliano, wanted as the main perpetrator of the Portella della Ginestra massacre, was contacted by Jacopo Rizza, a journalist for "Oggi", to whom he granted an exclusive interview. The photographer and cameraman Ivo Meldolesi also took part in the meeting and managed to film Giuliano in the daily life of his refuge: next to his cousin Gaspare Pisciotta, his lieutenant, while he reads "Oggi", asleep next to his rifle, armed or simply intent on eating with the cat at his feet. The bandit was killed on July 5, 1950 in Castelvetrano, where he was waiting to flee to Tunisia. The scoop gave a lot of glory to journalists, but was badly received especially by the carabinieri who judged the criminal unapproachable.
