Specialist Notes

The “Natural Physiognomy” is the main work of Giovanni Ingegneri, published for the first time in Venice by the Zoppini brothers in 1585 by their nephew the scholar Angelo Ingegneri. At the time, for some time, it was considered a dubious work by the Catholic church, due to its comparison with "Fisiognomy..." by Giambattista della Porta. It is a treatise on physiognomy, a discipline in use at that time that merged knowledge of philosophy, medicine and law to read the movements, gestures and signs of the body, and the emotions on the face, as clues to the guilt of an accused.
