Maria Dorothy Webb was born in Northern Ireland and was educated between her native Ireland and Paris, where since 1880 she has studied at the prestigious Académie Julian, the only alternative for artists to courses at the Academy of Fine Arts, forbidden to women until 1897. With her husband Harry Harewood Robinson, also a painter, she moved to St. Ives, Cornwall, becoming one of the protagonists of the local artistic colony. In 1883 he made his debut at the Parisian Salon, while in 1885, the same year as the work offered here, he exhibited at the annual exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, before various participations.
