Initially it was the organ of the activist protest against the conservative program of the curatorial committee of DOCUMENTA 4 directed by Arnold Bode, oriented almost exclusively to stimulate the activity linked to the art market.

During its seven-year period, the magazine radically changed, dealing with the new European and American artistic realities and in a few years it became one of the most important organs for contemporary art in Europe.
