Information

dating: circa 1900 provenance: Indonesia, Wide, curved, single-and double-edged-blade with wide central fuller and thin groove under the back made of very fine, dark pamor, the tip with dorsal hollow. Small ricasso, long triangular tang. In its original wooden case lined in red cloth with remains of sealing wax (old stamps?) and of an old label with the hand-written inscription 'Echt gedamasceerde sabel' (a real damask saber). The shape of this interesting blade is based on the Klewang blades of the 'Royal Netherlands East Indian Army' (KNIL). The KNIL or 'Koninklijk Nederlands Indish Leger' was formed by the royal decree on March 10th, 1830. It was not part of the regular army, but was a separate military unit of the Dutch East Indies. The blades were built in Hamburg, Solingen or Holland. Our blade, on the other hand, was forged in Indonesia by a native 'empu' craftsman, it was forged in pamor as the well-known kris blades which normally are shorter (blades of this length are rare even for the Indonesian standard). The blade was never used and was definitely commissioned by a Dutch officer or as a gift for an officer. length 94 cm.
