Information
Made of iron, maru-gata, sukashi-bori, maru-mimi, with the drawing of poppy buds, leaves and branches, the details are engraved in a precise, fine carving typical of the school; sekigane. Middle Edo period, circa 1700. Kept in Kiri box. The subject is rather rare in these tsubas but very much used in the Goto one. The Kyoto Shoami school originated in the 1600s and this is a product of the full maturity of the early 1700s, during which the subjects were treated with a very delicate sukashi.- The earlier patina is very well preserved. Provenance: Compton Collection, Christie's sale, NY 22/10/1992.
