Information
Made of sentoku with shakudo and shibuichi details. Nagamaru gata, kaku mimi, depicting a monkey on a cliff looking at the reflection of the moon on the water. Late Edo Period, circa 1800. The representation comes from a well-known Buddhist tale in which five hundred monkeys, holding each other by the tail, try to catch the moon's reflection, and suddenly the branch breaks. The monkeys represent unenlightened people who are unable to distinguish the true from the false.
