Rifled, two-stage, round and octagonal, 52 cal. barrel (clean bore, still visible rifling), with foresight and adjustable rear sight; frame with breechloading percussion system, with falling block bolt with lever, the right side marked "UNION RIFLE"; backward spring lock marked "GWYN & CAMPBELL PATENT 1862 HAMILTON O."; walnut butt (signs of use and small missing parts), iron mounts. Coeval serial number "2249" on the various parts. A bar with ring on the left side. Surface with rust damage. Together with the book "Cosmopolitan and Gwyn & Campbell Carbines in the Civil War", by Thomas B. Rentschler. Several cavalry regiments of the Confederate Army were equipped with these carbines, produced in 1863-1864. See Flayderman's Guide, Eighth Edition, p. 511.
