Information
Made of Suaka, naga-maru-gata, the border is thinned and the mimi becomes a small line. The surface is treated with a tiny and uniform ishime except on the mekugi-ana and on the border, where it is polished. From under a cluster of leaves a long, relieved-inlaid, shakudo taka-zogan tendril descends, the veins of the leaves are visible and finely engraved with ke-bori, with two silver "yugao" bottle gourds below, one ripe and one in bloom. On the ura some leaves and the artist's signature. In Japan, pumpkin is one of the symbols of longevity, therefore such a gift is certainly a wish for a long life. The patina is perfectly preserved. The Omori school, famous for its particular way of engraving the waves, is also specialised in naturalistic subjects (see a Kozuka in this Collection). The name of HIDETOMO is mentioned in the Shshankenshu and in Le Pertit Hara and is dated to the early 19th century. Provenance: Christie's sale, London, 16/06/1999.
