dating: 1670/80 provenance: Brescia, Very long, smoothbore, two-stage, 13,5 mm cal. barrels, octagonal at the first part with moulded frame at the base, signature 'LAZARINO COMINAZZO' the sides decorated with thin ribs outlined on both sides; then round with rings at the girdle and with the same rib at the back. Locks with signature, one signed 'Fra.co Garatto B.a', the other 'Fra.co Garatto Bre.a', engraved with floral motifs at the center; with tangs, hammers, pans and batteries majestically carved with floral motifs in high relief. Wooden full stock slightly carved and with small restorations. The rear parts with very fine, inlaid mounts richly pierced and engraved with floral motifs, cornucopias and snakes on one gun, and floral motifs on the other. Steel mounts beautifully carved with masks and floral motifs, some repeated on both pistols, others with different decorations. Both butt-plates with a snake in-relief at the center, both triggers pierced en suite. Steel-tipped wooden ramrod carved with floral motifs and with iron cartridge extractors. It is difficult to understand whether the differences between the two guns are intentional, or they simply are two different, yet very similar guns. Many identical mounts favor the first theory. The differences could easily be the result of an extravagant desire of the buyer to own a pair of uncommon pistols - and the great master fulfilled this desire. In any case, these are two pistols of exceptional quality, difficult to find especially at this length.See 'Brescian Firearms', by Nolfo di Carpegna, Edizioni de Luca, Rome 1997, pp 179-180. This pair has the same signature as M31.See also Barbiroli 'Repertorio Storico Degli Archibugieri Italiani dal XIV al XX Secolo', p. 286. length 57.5 - 58 cm.
