dating: 1881 provenance: USA, 6-1/2', rifled, cylindrical, 44-40 cal. barrel with high rib, bearing company inscription in two lines with patents up to 1877 and 'REISSUE JULY 25 1871' between crosses. Clean bore with slight signs of use, rifling clearly visible. Six-shot, 1-9/16' cylinder. Working mechanisms. Casehardened hammer, browned trigger guard. Well-preserved, nickel-plated finishing. Coeval serial number '60xx' on barrel, barrel latch, cylinder and grip. On the barrel also '1882' (date?). Checkered, hard rubber grips with Smith & Wesson monogram. In a later box decorated with S&W labels and old greaseproof paper. Interesting. Produced in series and numbered separately from the standard model, the .44 Double Action Frontier was produced in around 15,000 pieces. The initial production had address and patents in two lines.
