Information

dating: Period (1603-1867) provenance: Japan, Parallelepiped case with brass sides. The front one with the dial complete with hands, ideogram inscriptions and surrounded by engraved racemes. Engraved with racemes also on the sides, which can be opened to see the inner mechanism. Iron back and bottom. Ropes with various counterweights at the bottom. Once this type of clocks came with a bell on the back and was mounted on a wooden pedestal that hid the ropes with the counterweights. In the Edo period, time was measured with a variable system, which dated back to the 9th century. The day was divided into twelve segments of different lengths. Therefore, making mechanical clocks that correctly marked time was very complex. Such artifacts were made by specialized craftsmen and were very expensive. Only the Daimyos, wealthier merchants and high-ranking samurai, could afford to buy them, so by tradition these clocks became known as 'daimyo' clocks. height 21,5 cm.
