dating: 1933 provenance: Japan, Shaped as an anchor with a small chain, with the imperial coat of arms of Prince Kuni Asaakira at the centre, and with Japanese inscription at the back. Kept in a kiri-box, the outer lid with Japanese inscription 'Commemorative Gift for Graduation', inside the same inscription of the paperweight, handwritten with a different date (November 1st 1932). Kiri-box from 1933 with jeweller's mark 'I. SHINJO & CO. TOKYO JAPAN'. A very rare relic of a member of the Japanese imperial family. Prince Kuni Asaakira (1901 - 1959) was the elder brother of Empress Kojun (Nakago), Emperor Showa's (Hiroito) consort. He was a Vice-Admiral in the Imperial Fleet. The paperweight was a commemorative gift for all the guests of the naval college graduation party on 26 November 1932, celebrated on an unspecified date in the year 1933. Other paperweights donated by the prince can be found in private Japanese collections.Ours was given to one of his teachers at the naval college named Nakajima, as written on a note in English inside the kiri-box, dated 1948. dimensions 7.4 x 7.8 cm.
