Replica of a Star Trek uniform signed by Nichelle Nichols, Lieutenant Uhura from the first TV series.
Nichelle Nichols (1924-2022) was an American actress, singer, and dancer, best known for her role as Nyota Uhura in the original Star Trek television series (1966-1969). Her portrayal of Uhura, an African-American communications officer and linguist, was groundbreaking for television at the time and helped challenge racial and gender bias.
Uhura was a key character in the original Star Trek series. She was an intelligent and capable member of the Enterprise crew, and her role was critical to the ship's communications and diplomacy. She was thus one of the first African-American actresses to have a major, non-stereotypical role on a television series.
In addition to Star Trek, Nichols had a long and prolific career in entertainment, appearing in films, television, and theater. She was also an activist for civil rights and racial equality. She worked with NASA to recruit African Americans into the space program.
