Matteo Darmian (Legnano, 2 December 1989) is an Italian footballer, defender or midfielder for Inter and the Italian national team. He made his debut for the national team on 31 May 2014, at the age of 24, playing as a right-back in the Italy-Ireland friendly match (0-0) played in London. Called up for the 2014 World Cup, on 14 June he made his debut in the tournament by starting the match against England which the Azzurri won 2-1. Confirmed as a starter by coach Antonio Conte, on 10 October 2015 he scored his first goal for the national team, in the Azerbaijan-Italy match (1-3) played in Baku, which guaranteed qualification for Euro 2016. He was called up for the 2016 European Championship in France , where he earned four caps, missing the decisive penalty in the quarter-final shootout against Germany. With CT Ventura he was deployed in seven matches of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, including the two play-off matches against Sweden in which Italy was eliminated. In March 2023, more than five years after his last match with the Azzurri, he was recalled to the national team by coach Roberto Mancini, in view of the qualifying matches for the 2024 European Championship.
