Javier Zanetti (Dock Sud, 10 August 1973) is an Argentine footballer, who plays as a defender or midfielder, vice-president of Inter, and is considered one of the greatest Argentine players in the history of football as well as one of the best defenders of his generation. Raised in Argentina, he began his career first at Talleres and then at Banfield. In 1995 he moved to Inter, a team of which he captained from 2001 to 2014, the year in which he concluded his competitive activity. From Inter he becomes the player with the most appearances in history (858) as well as the most successful ever with sixteen trophies, including five Italian championships (2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009- 10), four Italian Cups (2004-05, 2005-06, 2009-10 and 2010-11), four Italian Super Cups (2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010), one UEFA Cup (1997-98), one Champions League ( 2009-10) and a FIFA Club World Cup (2010). He is also Inter's player with the most appearances as captain in the Champions League (82). With the Argentine national team, with which he reached the final of the America's Cup in 2004 and 2007 and the Confederations Cup in 1995 and 2005, he played 145 matches, a figure which makes him the third player with the highest number of appearances in the history of the Selección Albiceleste, behind Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano. With 1114 official matches played, he is tenth in the ranking of footballers with at least 1000 career appearances; he is also the foreigner with the most appearances in Serie A (615) and the fourth player overall for matches played in the aforementioned competition, behind Gianluigi Buffon, Paolo Maldini and Francesco Totti.
