Considered one of the best Italian players of all time, during his competitive career he always played for Roma, the team of which he was captain from 1998 to 2017, for a record total of 19 seasons, winning a scudetto (2000-2001, the third in Giallorossi history), two Italian Super Cups (2001 and 2007) and two Italian Cups (2006-2007 and 2007-2008). With 250 goals in Serie A, he is the player who has scored the highest number of goals with the same team in the Italian top division, of which he is the second best scorer of all time after Silvio Piola; with the Giallorossi he scored 307 goals in total, which constitute a record in Italy for a club team. He is also the striker with the most appearances in Serie A (619, third player overall behind Gianluigi Buffon and Paolo Maldini), a competition in which he is the only player, together with Maldini, to have taken part in 25 seasons and the only one who has scored in 23 championships, moreover consecutive. In the Champions League, however, he holds the record for the oldest goalscorer in the history of the competition, having scored his last goal at the age of 38 years and 59 days.
