The civic commitment that has always characterised Gianni Berengo Gardin's work emerges with great clarity in the images documenting the demonstrations to commemorate the terrible political-mafia massacre, 11 dead and 27 wounded, carried out on 1 May 1947 by Salvatore Giuliano's gang at Portella della Ginestra. This was the place where workers and above all peasants had gathered to pay homage to the Workers' Day that the fascist regime had abolished.
