When it was published in 1959 by Lerici, Mario Carrieri's book was not immediately understood whereas today it is considered one of the great classics of Italian photography. The fact was that few people perhaps knew then the harsh style that had characterised William Klein's photography, well known and appreciated, however, by Carrieri. The bold shots, an unusual narrative rhythm but above all those grainy black and white prints swept the many who only later understood the great anti-rhetorical message they conveyed.
